BIKARAOKE STEPS UP TO THE FITNESS MIKE

San Francisico Chronicle

Reyhan Harmanci, Chronicle Staff Writer

Monday, March 16, 2009

The expectation of Bikaraoke, an unholy mix of stationary biking and karaoke at In-Shape Health Clubs, was perhaps best summed up by Antioch resident Judy Donohue as she adjusted the seat on her bike. "Do I do karaoke normally? Not unless I'm intoxicated," said Donohue. A row of women at the weekly 5:30 p.m. class chuckled and bobbed their heads in agreement.

But there's definitely an allure to belting it out while biking, as the packed classes have proven.

"This is absolutely the highlight of my week," said Suzanne Evoniuk of Antioch. "I've never done a cycling class before this one, but the whole singing thing really makes the time fly by."

Class instructor Michelle Sargent said that even she has been surprised by the Bikaraoke experience, calling it the "most fun thing I've taught in 20 years."

It's not exactly a new concept. In-Shape Vice President Steve Saxton came up with the concept in the late '90s, when he was working in San Francisco for Crunch gyms.

"I was managing a club in San Francisco and walked by a cycling studio, and there were all of these twentysomethings pedaling as fast as they could. I thought, 'They are going to have a heart attack; they're so far out of their training heart rate,' " Saxton said in a phone interview.

"I thought about the talk test - if you can't carry out a conversation, you're working too hard. ... Somehow I got from talking to singing."

The classes were popular at Crunch, but are no longer done there.

In-Shape Health Clubs, a Bay Area fitness chain, introduced its version in January and plans to start classes at other In-Shape locations around the Bay Area and Southern California. Sargent said that from the first session on, classes have been packed. "There were 25 people in the first class," she says, "And the next class was just as big, but with a different crowd."

Sargent goes to great lengths to make the class comfortable for those like Donohue who don't sing outside karaoke bars. A microphone sits next to Sargent, on a dais in the center of the room, but the emphasis is on group singing. Two screens display song lyrics while Sargent talks her way through the class on a microphone headset. Bike instructions ("Race me! Faster!") are mixed with exhortations to sing louder.

For this class before Valentine's Day, Sargent chose a "love" theme: Madonna's "Like a Virgin."

"I do not hear you," she told the class. "You burn more calories when you sing!"

The class, tentative at first, picked up both the pace and volume by the second repetition of the chorus. The second song, "Every Breath You Take," by the Police, brought out more voices, but it wasn't until the third tune, Pat Benatar's "Hit Me With Your Best Shot," that the room really came alive. Sargent went out on a limb with the next one, Whitesnake's "Here I Go Again," which had people giggling as they panted their way through increased resistance.

As the class went on, it was clear that Bikaraoke was a hit. But it was also clear, as Sargent prodded and praised and cajoled the class into singing and pedaling hard, that a great instructor is what makes a great class. "San Francisco and L.A. have nothing on Antioch," Sargent bellowed, as the opening bars of "Addicted to Love" came on. "Now, anybody want the mike?"

NOT A HUM-DRUM WORKOUT AT IN-SHAPE

Published 07/31/2008 - 11:01 a.m. PDT

In-Shape Health Clubs has just expanded its diverse lineup of fitness activities with the addition of Drums Alive! – a group class that provides an alternative to traditional aerobics. The new class is being offered twice at week at In-Shape Sports Club Antioch, located at 4099 Lone Tree Way.

Drums Alive! combines traditional aerobic movements with the powerful beat and rhythm of the drums. It utilizes a stability ball and drumsticks to create fun, high-energy dance and rhythm routines designed to burn fat and improve physical and mental fitness. Drums Alive! is a workout for the entire body as well as a powerful tool for stress reduction and mental balance.

“Our members love it!” said Director of Group Exercise Darlene Kidwell. “It’s a class that anyone can take, regardless of fitness level. Plus it’s a great workout that keeps members entertained for a full hour.”

Instructors are specially trained and offer guidance on the unique moves involved in the class. “It’s not hard to catch on at all!” said Jennifer DeRita, In-Shape’s Drums Alive instructor. “I offer small tips and ways to get more out of each workout, but most people jump right in and have a great time in their first class.”

“It was really important to us to offer something different,” said General Manager Rick Cruz. “We know people have a choice when they look to join a health club. We always want to be one step ahead of the competition.”

Drums Alive! is offered twice a week to members for no additional cost. Classes are held at 7:30 p.m. on Mondays and 8:30 a.m. on Wednesdays. Non-members can try the class by calling 925-331-3065 and requesting a guest pass.

In-Shape Health Clubs, founded in 1981, owns and operates 30 locations in California and is ranked in the top 20 health club companies in the United States. In-Shape’s Brentwood location is 180 Griffith Lane.
